What is Turnover?

Portfolio turnover measures how much of a portfolio is bought or sold during a period relative to its average value, under a stated methodology.

A useful dashboard pairs turnover with realized cost, tax impact, active return, and changes in risk. That prevents users from optimizing the headline percentage in isolation and helps identify trading that was expensive but necessary versus activity that added no durable exposure benefit. The comparison period must remain visible.

Calculation conventions

A common fund measure uses the lesser of purchases or sales divided by average net assets, excluding certain short-term instruments, but regulatory conventions vary. Other analytics sum both sides, use absolute weight changes, or report annualized one-way turnover. Values are not comparable until formula, period, derivatives treatment, flows, and corporate actions are aligned.

What turnover reveals

Turnover can reflect active decisions, rebalancing, investor flows, index changes, derivative rolls, tax management, or forced trading. High turnover is not automatically harmful if expected net benefit exceeds costs, while low turnover does not guarantee quality or tax efficiency. A concentrated strategy can change risk substantially with modest measured turnover by trading one large position.

Example

A $100 million portfolio buys $30 million and sells $25 million during a year. A one-way lesser-side convention reports 25% turnover. Summing purchases and sales reports 55%, while dividing average absolute weight changes by two may give another figure. Each can be internally valid, but the label alone is insufficient for comparison.

Portfolio implications

Higher turnover generally increases spread, impact, fees, operational workload, and potential taxable realizations. It can also refresh exposures and enforce risk limits. Expected alpha should be assessed after turnover-dependent costs and capacity. Simulations must generate the actual trade list caused by contributions, withdrawals, rebalancing, and corporate actions rather than infer cost from return history alone.

Practical checklist

State the formula and annualization, separate client-flow trading from discretionary trading, and show turnover by asset class and reason. Reconcile quantities to executions and adjust for in-kind transfers or reorganizations. Compare with strategy horizon and liquidity. Avoid minimizing the statistic through derivatives, netting conventions, or omitted legs when economic exposure is changing materially.
